LEADING EXAMPLES
Background
A desk-top search in 2016 identified a limited number of leading ‘contemporary’ housing projects for people with cognitive and/or physical disability where the designers/clients claim to have a vision or philosophy that is person-centred – beyond the requirements of design for accessibility and mobility to meet universal design requirements.
Each project presented below captures:
-
the underlying person-centred principles/approaches incorporated in the project,
-
how the particular as-built housing design features (supporting the vision or philosophy) address the emotional feelings or well-being of people with a disability, and
-
post-occupancy comments related to the project.
It is noteworthy that in-depth post-occupancy evaluations of the projects do not seem to have been carried out.
